“Many years ago, my class of NG [New Genres] beginners challenged Tony’s [Tony Labat] class of upper division NG students to a game of broom hockey. He had all the Icelandic, Norwegians, Danish on his team, we had a hidden weapon, a semi pro from Minnesota. We won. I then wanted to place an ad in the SFAI recruitment announcements to potential incoming students to increase enrollments but of course the powers that be turned it down. The photo is of both teams. We played at a rink that used to exist out on the avenues, outer Sunset or outer Richmond. Some of the students: Kurt Lundblad was our staff manager in Performance/Video, later New Genres. Didi Dunphy was my T.A. ... We also did a Tug of War at Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park with half the class in row boats and half in peddle boats. This event was video taped and it occurred when England was at war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands.”
