Dear Tom,

Even though it gives me momentary feelings of exaltation to read that I once established an identity (painting) for San Francisco I must come down to earth—and even though I realize you’re not attempting a detailed and objective history of Early California—and even though it might be tedious to list names like Bischoff, Lobdell, Park, Corbett, Smith, Spohn, Jefferson, Dixon, Hultberg, Briggs and others (these are only the first wave—more to come in the mid-50s)—I must correct you. I don’t object to your summariness but I do to your omissions which can only generate further distortion of an already mangled history.

Clyfford Still taught at CSFA 3 1/2 years in the late forties and possibly only 3 1/2 months into 1950. I was on the faculty with him but was never his student. Best wishes for your new and good magazine.

Richard Diebenkorn

In January 1946, Richard Diebenkorn enrolled at SFAI as a student, and in September was awarded the school’s Albert Bender Grant, which allowed him to travel and work independently for a year. Diebenkorn went to New York, and when he returned the following year was offered his first teaching appointment at SFAI. He taught through 1949, and again from 1959 to 1966. The Richard Diebenkorn Teaching Fellowship was founded to honor his contributions as a teacher and to provide a similar opportunity to contemporary artists. Established in 1998 by the generosity of the family of Richard Diebenkorn, the fellowship provides an opportunity for artists to both teach at SFAI and have sufficient time and financial support to work in the studio.
