There are many things that happened throughout the course of history at SFAI.
But something important happened in 1977, with the San Francisco African American Historical and Cultural Society.
I got a chance to sit down with Dewey Crumpler, esteemed professor and historian, and phenomenal mentor.
So we had a discussion, and there was a prints and drawings show in 1977.
So I asked Dewey, “What happened during this show?”
What I received was a lesson in the history of Black Excellence from my parents’ generation. Also, an unexpected story about SFAI’s first Black art student, Sargent Claude Johnson.
